In the JSJ Self Help for Horses you will learn to immediately help you & your horse in the common situations that occur for all of us horse lovers. Many people who can not come to an 8 hour Self Help Class have learned to use these simple tools effectively after reading 1 or 2 of the JSJ books available through Kaaren in addition to a few private phone tutoring sessions.

In my 23 years of practicing both Asian and Western healing arts I have found Jin Shin Jyutsu® acupressure to be a tremendous ally to modern medicine. Sometimes the regular application of JSJ has eliminated or significantly reduced the need for medical intervention and in most cases it has eased the side effects of medications and has generally harmonized the animal or person with the medical treatment. The following cases are examples of the variety of ways JSJ can be beneficial:

• Horse Colic - As most horse people know, colic in a horse is not to be taken lightly as it can easily and quickly threaten a horse’s life. In most colic situations at our place a call is immediately placed to the vet and the appropriate JSJ is applied while waiting for the vet to arrive. Over 50% of the time when the vet does arrive they will find no signs of colic and will question why we called. The rest of the time they may find some signs of colic and will sedate and lubricate the horse to help relieve the congestion. In either case the JSJ has had a significant positive effect on the situation. And during the times where the colic has been severe and the vet has been delayed it has been a Godsend.

• Foal Birthing - A friend of mine breeds miniature horses and was experiencing a high rate of birthing problems such as miscarriages, foal deaths at or shortly after birth and mare foaling deaths. Once a week for a couple of months I would go apply JSJ on the pregnant mares and all of the problems just described decreased by 80%. I then trained the grooms, who had no experience with hands on healing of any kind, to do the simple and easy to remember JSJ holds and they have gotten the same results

• A Paralyzed Dog - We have two whippets and an acquaintance of ours near where we live who has four called and told us one of the older dogs was paralyzed and would not move. The vet said that her beloved whippet had had a severe stroke and they recommended the dog be euthanasized. Our acquaintance declined and took her dog home to die naturally. She then called me and asked if I could come over and help her. When I got there I found the dog alive and on its side unable to move as she had said. I then began applying some JSJ holds that I thought were appropriate and did so for over an hour. Truthfully I thought the dog was on her way out as she was very old but I knew the JSJ would provide whatever was in the animal’s highest good. The owner was of course distraught and so I showed her some JSJ self help as well as showing her what to do for the dog. After a few hours I felt I had done all that I could so I left and told the owner to call me at any time. Fully expecting the dog to have a peaceful passing I was surprised when the owner called me later that night and told me the dog was up and walking. The dog proceeded to enjoy another 6 months of good living before passing on peacefully.

Acupressure Self Help

Main Central Vertical Flow for humans (quick version)

Hold the top center area of your head with your right finger tips or hand and put the left hand/fingertips on your pubic bone. Maintain this until you either feel a rhythmic pulsation under both hands or you feel a sense of relaxation. This may take a few minutes especially at first. Then, still holding the top of your head with your right hand, move your left hand to your tailbone and hold until you feel the pulse or relaxation. Personally I feel that the MCV is the foundation of daily ‘basic energy hygiene.’ Just like brushing our teeth morning and evening I find that the MCV energizes me in the morning and clears and relaxes me at night.

Main Central Vertical Flow for horses (quick version per JSJ instructor Lynn Pflueger )

1) Stand left facing the horse. Hold the left fingertips/hand over the center of the poll and the right hand over the center of the whithers until your either feel a rhythmic pulsation under both hands or your horse sighs, licks, chews or shows other signs of relaxation. Notice your breathing and your horse’s breathing may synchronize and deepen as each step opens and harmonizes.

2) Move the left hand to the location held by the right hand at the center of the whithers and move the right hand to the place on the spine where the ribcage ends (T19 center of spine). Wait again for the pulses or relaxation to occur.

3) Move the left hand to the location of the right hand (T19 center of spine) and move the right hand to the base of the tail. Again wait for the pulses or relaxation to occur.

For horses in good health doing the MCV quick version once weekly is usually enough. For horses or animals with ‘projects’ doing this more often is sometimes needed. Remember, animals don’t need as much help as humans so ‘less is best.’

About Kaaren

I have a acupressure and nutrition practice in Santa Ynez, CA focusing on both animals and their human companions. My work draws on more than 23 years of experience in the Oriental Healing Arts as well as in Western natural healing methods. I also have 18 years of riding and horse keeping experience and for the past 10 years I have conducted an intensive study of saddle fitting. From this perspective over the years I have observed that many physical and behavioral issues can have roots in mis-matched equipment fit. For this reason I now teach saddle fitting as well as JSJ self help. I am available both in person and by phone for saddle fitting education and consultations as well as JSJ self help and personal sessions at a rate of $40 per hour.
